Like earth is a sufi

A Sufi is like the earth; even if impurities are thrown on it, it will flourish with lush greenery.

– Hazrat Junaid al-Baghdadi rahimahu Llah –

A Sufi is one…

1047

A Sufi is one, whose heart is like Sayyiduna Ibrahim ‘alayhi sallam, that it is free from the love of the world and one which is always ready to obey the commands of Allah, his acceptance should be like that of Sayyiduna Ismail ‘alayhi sallam, his sadness should be like that of Sayyiduna Dawood ‘alayhi sallam, His patience like that of Sayyiduna Ayub ‘alayhi sallam, his eagerness should be like that of Sayyiduna Musa ‘alayhi Salaam and in Dua, his sincerity should be like that of the Beloved RasulAllah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.’

– Shaykh al-Mashaik Junayd al-Baghdadi rahimahu Llah

O Allah, eliminate all traces, memories, recollections, and feelings that are not of You!

299

O Allah, I shelter behind you from all deeds that will displease you. O Allah, I ask for the most essential, the most clean, and the honor You bestow. O Allah, do not make me so busy that I fall into the forgetfulness of those who forget You. May I be worthy of Your approval. O Allah, make me a servant remembered only for loving You, hoping for nothing from his worship! O Allah, fill my heart with joy from You, purify my tongue with Your Names, let my limbs labor on tasks You will find good and of which You will approve. O Allah, eliminate all traces, memories, recollections, and feelings that are not of You!

– Hadhrat Junayd al-Bagdadi rahimahu Llah –

Ya Shaykh or Ya Allah?

457878'

Once Hazrat Shaykh Junaid Baghdadi (rahimahu Llah) came to the shores of river Tigris and began the Dhikr of “Ya Allah”. He then walked over the water as if he was on solid ground and crossed the river.

Before he crossed, a man was also waiting for transport to go across. When the man saw the Shaykh crossing, he said.

Ya Shaykh! l would also like to go across.

The Shaykh said,

Repeat Ya Junaid! Ya Junaid! And follow me.

The man did that and began walking on the water.

As he reached the middle of the river, the Shaitaan confused his mind by saying. “Who is greater, Allah or the Shaykh? The Shaykh himself is saying Ya Allah! Ya Allah! but orders you to say Ya Junaid! Ya Junaid!. This is Shirk. Abstain from this and imitate the Shaykh who says Ya Allah, Ya Allah”.

The cursed Shaitaan misled the man and he began to say “Ya Allah” As soon as he invoked the Name of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), he began drowning and screamed for help.

The noble Shaykh (rahimahu Llah) watched this and shouted to him,

Say Ya Junaid, Ya Junaid, as I ordered you to do!

The man did so and was amazed to feel the water under his feet transformed as hard as the ground. He crossed over to safety.

When he reached the banks, he inquired from the Shaykh.

O Shaykh! l cannot understand this puzzle, You said ‘Ya Allah Ya Allah’ and crossed over safely. But when I invoked His (subhanahu wa ta’ala) Glorious Name I began drowning?

The Noble Wali (rahimahu Llah) replied,

O ignorant! You have not as yet understood Junaid and have dreams of understanding Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala)

Subhanallah!

Junaid Baghdadi rahimahu Llah and his love for Allah

65487

Once at the time of Hajj, there was a gathering in Mecca of some friends of Allah; the youngest among whom was Junaid Baghdadi rahimahu Llah. In that gathering, there was a discussion on the subject of ‘Love for Allah’ and as to who is the lover of Allah. Many of them expressed their views on the subject, but Junaid rahimahu Llah kept quiet. He was pressed to say something.

With his head bowed down and tears in his eyes, he said,

“The lover of Allah is he who forgets his own self, remains engaged in Allah’s remembrance with due regard to all its requirements; sees Allah with the eyes of his heart, which is burnt by the heat of Allah’s fear; Allah’s remembrance affects him like a cup of wine, he speaks the word of Allah as if All-Mighty Allah speaks through his mouth; if he moves, he does so under the command of Allah; he gets peace of mind only through the obedience of Allah; and when such a stage is reached, his eating, drinking, sleeping, awakening and, in short, all his actions are for the pleasure of Allah; he neither pays heed to the worldly customs, nor does he attach any importance to unfriendly criticism by people.”

Tasawwuf is…

‘Tasawwuf is that which kills you and lives by itself. The most powerful relationship, is that of the servant to his Creator, when he tries to understand the secrets of Tawhid, and all roads are sealed to the creation, except the road of the Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).’
