Yet you kill the first and feed these two
How can you keep on cursing the wicked Yazid?
You are a Yazid to your own Husayn

When al-Ḥusayn radi Allahu ‘anhu was martyred, the world stood still for seven days and the stars collided with one another. He was killed on the Day of ‘Ashūra’ [10th of Muharram] and there was a lunar eclipse on that day and the horizon was a blood-red color for six months after that. The redness of the sky continued after that, even though such a thing had never been seen before. It was also said that not a single stone was overturned in Jerusalem on that day except that fresh blood was found beneath it.

inWhen the captives comprising of the blessed household of our Beloved Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) chained, heartbroken, and wounded were brought to the court of Ibn Ziyād (Yazīds governor in Kūfa) he asked Lady Zaynab radi Allahu ‘anha (Imām ‘Alī’s eldest daughter (radi Allahu ‘anhu) and, Imam Ḥusayn’s sister (radi Allahu ‘anhu)):
“Did you see what God brought to your brother Ḥusayn?”
She replied:
“By God, I saw nothing but beauty.”

inSo great and eminent a personality, is this great Prophet – Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, whose Kingdom encircles the East and the West and whose greatness and stature, is heard in all the Seven Heavens; yet, there is no ornamentation in his house. In his entire blessed life, he did not even get a stomach full of dried dates and wheat to eat!
“The possessor of the entire universe, yet, coarse wheat is his food,May there be a thousand salams upon his blessed appetite”
Look at his regal robes! Nearly seventy patches adorn them. Most amazing of all, even those pieces of cloth for the patchwork are not of the same fabric! For nearly two continuous months, no smoke is seen in the Royal Kitchen, (preparing any food). This is the condition of his worldly life. And when we look at his Religious Existence, we take an oath that the entire universe sings his praises.
“He is the true leader of the entire universe, yet, though there is nothing (externally) with him, the treasures of both worlds are found in his bare hands!”
At this time, let us emphasize that these trials and tribulations are happily carried out by him. He has not been made helpless.
Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam!

inDarkness of this day aches my heart,
A shade after Asr, Karbala turns red.
And trials intensify for the noble women;
Even today you can hear their shrills.
Thus, the mountains have turned mute,
For they’ve witnessed a great atrocity.

inHadhrat ‘Ali Hujviri (rahimahu Llah) was one of the greatest Persian mystics that the Islamic world has ever seen. A prominent Sunni Hanafi scholar and descended from both Sayyiduna Imam al-Ḥasan the son of ‘Ali and Imam al-Ḥusayn the son of ‘Ali (radi Allahu ‘anhum), he commanded deep respect from both his contemporaries and later Muslim scholars.
His magnum opus, Kashf al-Mahjub, was among the first treatises on Islamic mysticism to be composed in Persian. His tomb in Lahore continues to be one of the most celebrate Sufi shrines in South Asia.
~ The following section is drawn from his Kashf al-Mahjūb:
And among the Ahl al-Bayt is the shining light of the Family of Muḥammad, the Lord of his Age (sayyid zamānihi), Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may God be pleased with them both. He was from among the truthful saints and the beacon for the oppressed everywhere. He was murdered in the deserts of Karbala. All those adhering to our path are agreed that he was absolutely righteous in his cause because he was pursuing truth as long as it was manifest. And when truth faded away he unsheathed his sword in its cause and did not desist until he offered his blessed soul as a sacrifice and was martyred in the way of God.

inHusayn ibn Ali radi Allahu ‘anhum uprooted despotism forever, till the day of Resurrection. He watered the dry gardens of freedom with a surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation. If Imam Hussein Radi Allahu ‘anhu had aimed at acquiring the worldly empire, he would not have travelled the way he did. Hussein weltered in blood and dust for the sake of truth. Verily, therefore he becomes the foundation of Muslim creed. ‘La Ilaha Ill Allah (there is no deity but Allah.)

inA darling of Huasyn bin Ali (radi Allahu ‘anhum) who once exclaimed that a house without her is not worth living in. At an impressionable age she traveled to Karbala with her family, where she witnessed the loss of her nearest male family members in front of her eyes.
And from there on endured immense trials and tribulations which she and other women of the ahl al-bayt endured with beautiful patience.
I can’t fathom the depravity and hopelessness of that moment when she cried “I am thirsty, O my uncle Abbas!” with parched lips on the plains of Karbala.

inI heard a fool dilute the events of Karbala,
So I asked: “Wasn’t Muhammed’s family not deprived of water?
Didn’t Abbas die in pursuit of acquiring water for the children?
Didn’t Husayn ibn Ali die on the bloody plains of Karbala?
And wasn’t the patient Zaynab unveiled?”
If all of that & more happened on those dark days of Muharram,
It is undoubtedly a calamity of great magnitude.
My hands shiver by the mere thought of it & I’m no shia,
I’m from the lineage of Umar Ibn Khattab.

inA lovely selection from the writings of Sheikh Muhammad Khalid Thabit of Egypt: The Martyrdom of our Master Husayn -may the pleasure of Allah be upon his pure self:
The martyrdom of Husayn illustrates more than anything else the paltriness of the material world in the sight of Allah, and shows truly how it does not equal even a gnat’s wing in His estimation. The world is ephemeral and swiftly fading; there is no delight in it that remains, and no punishment in it that lasts, and so for this reason, Allah is not pleased with the world for His saints and beloveds [as a reward]. Therefore in compensation, Allah has granted them an everlasting and endless bliss: “Indeed, the abode of the Hereafter, that is the real [eternal] life, if they but knew.” (Quran 29:64)

inIf someone fasts on the day of ‘Ashura’ in Muharram, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand angels [malak]. If someone fasts on the day of ‘Ashura; in Muharram, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand martyrs [shahid], as well as the spiritual reward of ten thousand pilgrims [hajj] and visitants [mu’tamir]
If someone strokes the head of an orphan with his hand on the day of ‘Ashura’ for every hair on the orphan’s head, Allah ta ála will promote him by one degree in the Garden of Paradise.
If someone provides a believer [mu’min] with a meal to break his fast on the night of ‘Ashura’, it will be just as if the entire Community [Umma] of Muhammad had broken fast as his guests, and had filled their stomachs to capacity.
