Do you mock supplication and belittle it?

Do you mock supplication and belittle it?
While you do not know what it has the power to do!
The arrows of the night (du’a) do not miss their target
But they have a set limit, which shall come to end
So if my Lord wishes, He holds it back
And if the decree is to be fulfilled, He sets it forth.

Imam al-Shafi’i’s statement (rahimahu Llah)

Sayyiduna Imam al-Shafi’i rahimahu Llah stated in his final days of sickness :

When my heart was hardened and my courses constrained , I made my hope a stairway to Your forgiveness . My sins burdened me heavily , but when I measured it by Your forgiveness Lord … Your forgiveness was far greater.

During Ramadan…

During Ramadan, Imam Shāfi would complete the Qur’an once during the day and once during the night, so that by the end of the month he had completed the Qur’an sixty times. People used to be so absorbed in worship during Ramadan that they would hardly see their relatives or their friends. They would see each other briefly at the Friday prayer but even then everyone would be busy with prayer and reciting the Qur’an. For this reason ‘Eid would be a joyful occasion, because on that day it would be as if people were meeting each other for the first time after having been apart from each other for a whole month.

Good Character

Imām Shafi`ī (rahimahu Llah) was once asked how he had come to attain such good character. He replied:

By taking my critics seriously.

Your forgiveness was the greater…

Imam al-Shafi’ (rahimahu Llah) in his final sickness said,

When my heart was hardened
and my courses constrained
I made my hope a stairway
to Your forgiveness
My sin burdened me heavily,
but when I measured it
by Your forgiveness
Your forgiveness was the greater.

The Household of the Messenger of Allah

In regard to the Verse of the Quran = 42:23 Ayatul Muwaddah the great Imam Shafi’ rahimahu Llah beautifully recited a poem:

O members of the Household of the Messenger of Allah! Loving you is an obligation, which Allah has revealed in the Quran.

On the greatness and loftiness of your station, it is enough that anyone who does not invoke blessings upon you, then it is as if he has not invoked blessings at all.

He loved this verse and others so much so, that he made it obligatory according to his school to recite the Durud Ibrahimiyyah within Salat.

When a pressing need occured…

Imam Shafi’i (rahimhu Llah) also would visit the grave of Imam Abu Hanifa (rahimahu Llah) and pray there when he had some pressing need and ask God to fulfill that need, which would invariably be fulfilled. (al-Baghdadi, Tarikh Baghdad, 1.122)

The love for Ahl al-Bayt

Oh Ahl al-Bayt! Allah (subhana hu wa ta’ala) has made it obligatory in the Noble Qur’an to love you.  It is a matter of pride for you that without invoking blessing on you, prayer is not valid.

– Imam Shaf’i رحمه الله تعالى –
